I was curious enough that I looked into it a bit and it sounds like the difference is negligible at this point because they added keyboard binds for partial presses in response to analog keyboards(?). Again, I haven’t played TM2 or anything after, last game I played was TMUF/TMNF, so I haven’t tried using them myself, however when I was looking to see what the kb/controller/wheel split was I found a lot of people saying that there isn’t a strong reason to use one over the other anymore due to the new binds.

Edit: it actually makes me kinda happy to talk about this. I loved the games as a teenager, but they were too niche and I never had anyone to talk to about them.

Edit 2: damn, I remember finding the OG game at Fry’s and thinking it looked like the coolest game ever and getting confused when no one else thought it was sick as fuck (everyone was into Halo and CoD, and tbf, I was into them too; but I had patrician tastes that spanned multiple genres, not like the casuals I grew up around u.u)

Huh, I was under the impression that high level players used keyboards and that gamepads were unusual. I was almost certain I’d read that keyboards were considered better because they were full-on/full-off instead of analog; the logic being that it let you respond faster. Where an analog stick would have some ramp-up time when you switch directions, a keyboard would register a full press the moment the key is pressed far enough to complete the circuit. Meanwhile, the physics of Nations were made with keyboards in mind, so analog controls wouldn’t offer that much of an improvement.

At least, I was sure that’s what I’d read.

Edit: that may have been before TrackMania 2, I’m not even sure if Nations supports analog controls. I haven’t played any of the games after Nations/United.

TrackMania – I recommend Nations Forever if you’re starting out; it’s free and Nations was the “meta” environment (different environments have different physics) for a long time, so there’s a fuckton of custom content for it.

As for what it is: it’s like the racing genre’s Quake equivalent. It’s also like super hot wheels. And it’s like Mario Maker. You make all kinds of crazy tracks with it, like Mario Maker. The tracks feature all kinds of wall rides, half-pipes, jumps, loops, and so on, with nothing more than inertia holding you to the track; like hot wheels. And finally, like Quake (and Mario Maker), the high-level players are bat shit insane.

This is the game where you get people who can hit a jump at just the right angle so they thread the needle through a series of holes barely larger than the car while travelling at speeds well above 300mph (welcome to TrackMania, I don’t think there’s a speed cap). They also do it using keyboards. Seriously. High-level TrackMania players use keyboards, not gamepads or, god forbid, racing wheels.

All of that said, no pressure because you’re mainly racing yourself, even in multiplayer. You’re trying to get the best time on a track, and multiplayer is basically the same, except your time is being compared with everyone else’s. There isn’t even any vehicle collision (strangely, there’s an option for it, but it doesn’t seem to do anything).

Play TrackMania. Is fun.

Fyi, from what I’ve read anarchists reject the cookbook and interpret it as being pro-government while also having inaccurate and dangerous recipes. There are better resources for the latter (including official military handbooks), while the former encourages people to roll over and take whatever abuse they’re handed.

When it comes to punching Nazis, would I actually do it IRL? I’m not sure. It’d probably depend on whether I’m in a “fuck it, we ball” kinda mood or not. If I am, then I’m absolutely going to try and wreck the Nazi to the best of my ability. They might not get back up. If not, then I’d probably just roll my eyes, lose a little more faith in humanity, and keep going.

What you need to realize is that the Nazi would absolutely do the same to you, possibly worse, if given the chance; and people are too busy to research every single person they come across and are too desensitized to respond to “he’s literally a Nazi” (America’s right wing did a great job of painting “Nazi” as being meaningless in a modern context). That makes it very easy for them to lie to the general population about their goals.

Look at how far Trump and Vance have gotten. They literally support Nazis and Klansmen (Ku Klux Klan), yet people seemed to actually believe that Biden was as bad as Trump. It wasn’t until Trump started talking about Hatians eating pets at a national debate that people stopped and were like, “damn, what the fuck?”

What if he hadn’t though? What if he’d managed to keep his cool and pretend to be normal? The thing that scares me is that I think he might still have a chance, simply because I think the recent debate may have inspired false confidence in Democrats.

Nazis, Klansmen, bigoted institutions in general, will take a mile if you give them an inch, and proceed to wrap it around your neck and hang you from a tree with it; and they’re very good at getting what they want because they’ll literally eat shit if they believe it’ll help them win. They believe utopia is achieved through oppression and mass murder; wouldn’t you do anything you can to achieve utopia if you think it’s in arms reach, especially when the path is obvious thanks to the efforts of prior fascists?

I’ve been thinking more, and I think the Internet would be better off if it was segregated into two, mutually incompatible lanes. Lane 01: slow lane for webpages, online games, general web usage. Lane 02: high speed but exclusively for filesharing. Lane 01 content can provide links to Lane 02 content for filesharing purposes, but Lane 02 is set up so it can’t actually be embedded.

Idk, more options? It’s a self-balancing thing-a-ma-bob that takes you places when you stand on it. It’s cool and more options are nice. Also, I find it kinda amusing that you think a Segway-compatible city wouldn’t also be bike-compatible. They max out at like, 12mph. Listen. Look around you. People expect for you to be connected 24/7. Your boss, your friends, family, they all expect you to be connected nowadays. Hell, Australia had to pass a law stopping employers from contacting you outside of work hours.

Then everyone has an opinion and they all want to share it (me too!), and if you don’t have an opinion, you’re a fucking weirdo, a dirty centrist, ignorant, or many other things (you’re probably a Nazi or something, shithead).

Social media is designed to make you feel like shit and you’re antisocial if you’re not on some social media site.

Everyone is depressed and tormented by the constant flow of negative information on their pocket squares that they feel obligated to subject themselves to, all because someone they care about will get mad or be disappointed if they don’t know or have an opinion about everything that happens every second of every minute of every hour of every day. I have a pocket square (which I’m using right now) because I feel like I have to have one nowadays. A significant amount of this is enabled by widespread high-speed Internet. Some of it would still exist, but a lot of it would become unfeasible due to the Internet being too slow. Doesn’t matter if you have some crazy 32core phone with 64gb of ram and 2tb of ssd storage if you’re limited to T-1 speeds or slower.

Yes, the Internet is great and has done a lot of good things, and quite honestly, at the end of the day I honestly think it’s done more good than bad. But I also think it’s massively overrated at this point.

Cell phones kinda fit into the same category of, “everyone expects you to always be reachable”; and with the same conclusion (still good but overrated). I don’t know how I feel about non-cellular tablets.

I was legitimately sad it didn’t take off. It was a really cool piece of tech but it got mocked for being nerdy or geeky.

Probably nothing beyond normal VR stuff. It’s still pretty new and it sounds like Apple is still trying to figure out the chicken or the egg problem when it comes to developing an entirely new platform and have decided to try putting the egg first to see if anyone will incubate it for them. Who knows if they’ll commit long enough for it to pay off. Tbh I can see VR enthusiasts still getting something out of it since it sounds like people have figured out how to get it working with steamvr. Other than that though, I don’t really see any uses for it. I think they’re going to have to spend a lot of time looking for problems that are worth paying $1,000~$2,000 to solve (I’m assuming that’s what a “consumer” version would cost), and then refine their solution until it feels natural before widespread adoption will be a thing.

Iirc a nuclear rocket would cut travel time down to centuries between stellar systems. While cruising the galaxy in one go might not be feasible, travelling to a nearby system would be.

Wasn’t part of the Fermi Paradox that a bunch of scientists got together and found that you needed super duper extraordinary evidence that aliens hadn’t visited earth; because a civilization capable of building any form of self-replicating exploratory drone would have been able to map our entire galaxy in less than 1,000,000yrs, assuming a speed of 0.1c?

Iirc the fact that we haven’t found a probe, interstellar message, colony ships or artificial extraterrestrial satellites yet is the super duper extraordinary evidence that supposedly disproves their existence. Our galaxy alone is so huge that the fact that there aren’t aliens is the weird part.

Also, part of the reason why exploring the galaxy would be so slow is because humans are too scared of nuclear engines. We’re literally shooting ourselves in the foot when it comes to space travel because we’re too paranoid of nuclear to find a safe way of getting a nuclear engine into orbit. Nuclear engines would dramatically reduce the travel time not just within our system but also other systems to something reasonable.

Probably not. If so, they’re probably intentionally avoiding us for one reason or another.

Do aliens exist elsewhere in the universe?

Almost certainly. Our universe is a very big place.

Is it possible aliens have been here?

Well, sure! Humans like exploring, aliens may also like exploring. If aliens had a similar desire to explore as humans, they’d probably eventually end up in our solar system.

However, that doesn’t mean any of the videos or photos are real, nor does that mean they were here during human history. For all we know, they could have stumbled across our planet, took a bunch of pictures of dinosaurs, got bored, hurled a rock at the earth and then left.

Edit: We don’t really have any strong evidence for or against it. On the one hand, we haven’t seen any (that we know of). On the other hand, it could be that we’re looking in the wrong places or have misidentified stellar phenomenon as being natural. We really don’t know.

Maybe the most significant issue is that, for some reason, the Seekers of the Storm update has tied Risk of Rain 2’s physics systems to its frame rate. When asked about it on Discord, Gearbox developer GBX-Preston said FPS-related issues, “and all the ramifications on balance/physics/attack speed/movement/etc. were not intentional. This is in our top handful of issues we’re investigating.” As a stopgap, he said players experiencing issues should lock the game at 60 fps.

You should take a look at game prices for anything older than PS2/GameCube (and even some games from that era are obscenely expensive). For a long time, LSD: Dream Emulator was one of the most expensive games you could get at around $200 for a pristine copy. Nowadays, there are a ton of games that are >$200 for a junk, beat-up copy. The price skyrocketed thanks to WATA/Heritage Auctions doing a lot of suspected pump and dumping that, as a couple examples, got an LoZ copy sold for nearly $900,000 and a copy of Super Mario Bros sold for nearly $700,000. Afaik the only known copy Chu-Teng didn’t sell for that much, and that was considered to be lost media.

Even if all you want is to have a copy of Banjo-Kazooie then have fun forking over $20ish for a loose cartridge or >$100 if you want the box and manual. That’s not how it used to be. Used to be that you could get a loose cartridge for like, $2 in a bundle of 10 of them.

Edit: this also applies to old computers. Remember when you could get a beige CRT by the side of the road for free? Have fun paying >$50 for a shitty CRT, >$200 for a decent one, and >$1000 for a good one. It’s not just CRTs either; basically anything to do with old PCs is becoming obscenely expensive as well.

(Kaze Emanuar is a ROM hacker with a deep understanding of Super Mario 64. A couple years ago he released a video showing how he spent a ton of time optimizing the game, resulting in a game that runs on original hardware at 60fps instead of 20fps. Afaik he hasn’t released the vanilla code yet, but I’ve heard he’s used it in some of his other rom hacks and it’s apparently extremely obvious because they run significantly faster than hacks that use the default, unoptimized ROM)
